Annika and Klas Larsson have gone through a difficult time in their marriage due to the death of their child. In an attempt to solve the crisis and begin a new life, they buy a second-hand yacht, the S/Y Glädjen, which they repair and make seaworthy again. They intend to take a year off from the lives and sail around the world. In the course of getting ready to sail, Annika discovers that the yacht's previous owners were caught in a hurricane in the Bay of Biscay, and only two members of the family survived. Intrigued by this fatal accident, she begins to investigate the story.
